HUNSTANTON LIGHTHOUSE ON THE AIR GB2HLH

16th & 17th AUGUST 2008

This 'Lighthouse on the Air' event was once more organised by Andy-G1KLP on behalf of 'King's Lynn Amateur Radio Club'.

Events actually started on Friday 15th August on a fine and sunny afternoon, when a number of willing volunteers arrived on the grass area next to the lighthouse to set up the equipment. This included a G5RV, HF long wire, HF vertical (design and construction courtesy of Peter-G0IJU as he said "You can't operate from beside the sea without a vertical"), a trailer mounted 2Mtr vertical and the club generator for power. The HF antennas were mounted using portable masts kindly loaned by Trevor-M3GJA and the equipment was protected from the elements within a substantial tent loaned by 'North Angia Raynet' via Kevin-G0SCQ. The club's Icom 736 was installed as the main station with an Icom 706 MKIIG courtesy of Paul-M1BPT as second/backup radio. Ted-G4OZG left the site until about lunchtime on Saturday. While at home he worked the lighthouse on 80Mtrs and also 2Mtrs and after returning with another VHF radio on Saturday Ted did some 2Mtr working and had a few contacts including the Norfolk Club operating from 'Happisburgh Lighthouse'.

Ray-G3RSV arrived at about 23.00Hrs on Friday and operating went well until generator problems at about 02.00Hrs on Saturday morning forced Andy, Peter & Ray to get their heads down. Ray says "We made ourselves comfortable but after approx half an hour Andy and myself suffered some very heavy local QRM (noise emanating from Peter's berth) so I then took up residence in my car for the rest of the night". It appears that as dawn broke Andy managed to persuade Peter to go for a walk so he could get some sleep as well. At around 06.00Hrs Trevor arrived back and Peter returned from about an hour’s beachcombing expedition, and it was then decided to tackle the generator problems. This was carried out successfully and the station was back on the air with a vengeance. Ray returned home at approx 10.00Hrs returning to the event site at approx 10.00Hrs on the Sunday morning only to discover that operating was being undertaken with batteries and by candlelight. He remained on site for the rest of the day taking over the microphone at about 13.00Hrs for the last two hours of operation. This was a very hectic 2 hours trying to clear the backlog of stations trying to contact them.

Andy has asked that thanks be extended to the 'Lighthouse Cafe' for their food & toilet facilities, 'Hunstanton Coastguard' for the use of their emergency leisure batteries, the 'Borough Council' for the use of the site, whoever manufactured the candles which provided lighting when the generator finally failed and in particular, for all those who took part in making the event so enjoyable including Trevor, Ray, Peter, Ted, Kevin & Paul with apologies for anyone missed out in error, not least the amateurs who answered their CQ calls.
